Slight Decrease in Weekly Raw Steel Production

Domestic raw steel production declined slightly last week, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute in Washington.

In the week ending June 24, raw steel production totaled 1,729,000 net tons, down 0.6 percent from the previous week and down 1.5 percent from the same week last year.

Adjusted year-to-date production through totaled 43,353,000 net tons, up 2.3 percent from the same period in 2016.

The mill capacity utilization rate now averages 74.4 percent for the year, down from 74.6 percent last week but up from 72.6 this time last year.

Production by district for the June 17-24 week and the week-over-week changes are as follows: Northeast up 4,000 tons to 210,000; Great Lakes down 18,000 tons to 642,000; Midwest up 6,000 tons to 167,000; South down 5,000 tons to 633,000; and West up 3,000 tons to 77,000.

Total capacity for second-quarter 2017 is approximately 30.3 million tons, compared to 30.4 million tons for the same period last year and 30.0 million tons for first-quarter 2017.

The Raw Steel production tonnage provided in this report is estimated. The figures are compiled from weekly production tonnage provided from 50 percent of the domestic producers combined with monthly production data for the remainder. Therefore, this report should be used primarily to assess production trends. The AISI monthly production report, available by subscription, provides a more detailed summary of steel production based on data supplied by companies representing 75 percent of U.S. production capacity.
