Written by Brett Linton
August 10, 2017
U.S. steel exports in June totaled 910,988 net tons (826,435 metric tons), down 9.5 percent over May, but up 12.3 percent from June 2016. Although down over last month, total June exports are in line with the average monthly level over the last few months. Back in May, total exports had climbed to 1,006,087 tons, a 2.5-year high. The total June export figure is below the three-month moving average (average of April 2017, May 2017 and June 2017), but above the 12-month moving average (average of July 2016 through June 2017). Here is a breakdown of flat rolled and plate steel exports:
Cut plate exports increased 7.8 percent from May to 108,582 tons, but were down 3.0 percent compared to levels one year ago.
Exports of coiled plate were 65,419 tons in June, up 21.1 percent month over month and up 80.2 percent year over year.
Hot rolled steel exports decreased 5.4 percent month over month to 86,971 tons, but were up 52.0 percent from June 2016 levels.
Exports of cold rolled products were 56,785 tons in June, down 34.2 percent from May, but up 15.7 percent over the same month last year.
Galvanized exports fell 24.0 percent month over month to 124,298 tons. Compared to one year ago, June levels were up 7.4 percent.
Exports of all other metallic coated products came in at 25,851 tons, a 11.1 percent increase from May and a 43.6 percent increase compared to one year ago.
