Nucor, BRS Announce New Zinc Coating Extras for '22

Nucor and Big River Steel have joined the ranks of sheet mills announcing new coating extras for 2022.

“Consistent with our practice to monitor the cost of zinc, we have revised our galvanized coating weight extras,” Charlotte, N.C.-based Nucor said in a letter to customers on Wednesday, Dec. 1.

galvanized coilThe new coating extras will be effective the week of Jan. 8, 2022, the steelmaker said. And the new extras are higher than those effective on Feb. 6, 2021, according to initial SMU calculations.

Extras for Big River Steel – a subsidiary of Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel – are effective on Jan. 1, 2022.

Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI) and NLMK USA have also announced new zinc coating extras.

Zinc, which is used to make galvanized products and which prevents corrosion, reached a multi-year high of $1.7369 per pound on Oct. 15. But zinc prices declined in November. They hovered around $1.50 per pound and ended last month at $1.5066.
