Pump Failure at Nucor Decatur EAF

Nucor reported a pump failure in an electric arc furnace (EAF) at their Decatur, Alabama facility on Tuesday, January 7. According to sources, a water cooled panel on the furnace erupted causing a small blast during the beginning of a scheduled maintenance period. No one was injured and the incident will not delay scheduled maintenance. No supply or production interruptions are expected said a Nucor spokesperson.
Nucor provided the following information regarding the incident at Nucor Decatur:
Yesterday, there was a pump failure in an EAF at the Nucor Steel Decatur mill in Alabama. No one was hurt and the mill was beginning a planned maintenance period when the incident occurred. There will not be a delay in the timeline for the maintenance period. There will also be no impact on our production schedule or any interruption to supply.
Nucor Decatur is a producer of flat rolled, cold rolled steel, galvanized, galvannealed and pickled steel (HRPO). The facility has two EAF furnaces with heat size ton rating of 220 tons and a combined annual capacity of 2.4 million tons.
