January 12, 2014
November steel export data indicates total US steel exports were 939,185 net tons (NT) for the month of November 2013, the lowest levels seen since December 2010 when exports were 934,471 NT. Total November steel trade to countries outside of the United States is down 17.1 percent compared to October levels and down 6.0 percent compared to tonnage from the same month one year prior.
The most popular exported products in November were galvanized with 109,348 NT, plates cut lengths with 100,522 NT, structural shapes with 86,278 NT, and hot rolled with 57,939 NT.
Galvanized exports were down 6.0 percent in November over October, but were 6.6 percent higher than November 2012 levels. Plates cut lengths were down 6.8 percent month-over-month, but up 3.3 percent year-over-year. November exports of structural shape dropped 11.4 percent over October and were down 15.8 percent compared to levels one year ago. Hot rolled exports dropped dramatically in November by 44.4 percent over October, and were down 13.5 percent over tonnage from one year prior.
Below is a table that mimics the one we publish with our import statistics. The products covered are the same as those with imports, but this may change in the future as SMU expands our analysis on select steel exports. (Source: US Dept of Commerce)
