SMU Price Ranges & Indices: Mixed Messages

The past couple of days have been ones full of mixed messages. As we report in our article about HARDI wholesalers (see below) their buyers reported galvanized prices as having increased by $20 per ton since the middle of July. We are hearing from a multitude of sources that flat rolled prices have firmed on all products. At the same time we are hearing from other buyers that we still live in a “talk to me if you have tons to place” world and not all is as it seems to be.

An executive with a service center reported one of their suppliers raised transaction prices on galvanized by $60 per ton last Monday only to have the increase rescinded on Monday of this week. This source told me they were less convinced the price increases that were being pushed earlier this month would “stick” in the marketplace.
