Canadian Service Centers Holding 3.3 Months of Flat Rolled

Canadian shipments for all steel products in the month of September were 494,400 net tons, an increase of 8.3 percent from the month before and an increase of 4.1 percent from September 2013. Inventories at the end of the month stood at 1,511,400 tons, up 0.8 percent from last month and up 16.5 percent from the same month one year ago. The daily average receipt rate for September was 24,100 tons (21 day month), down from 24,306 tons the month before (20 day month). Total September receipts were 18,000 tons lower than the August figure. According to the MSCI, total months on hand stood at 3.1 months, down from 3.3 months the previous month, but up from 2.7 months in September 2013.
Flat Rolled
Canadian shipments of flat rolled products for the month of September were 241,600 tons, an increase of 7.4 percent from the month before and an increase of 1.7 percent from the same month one year ago. Inventories at the end of the month were 807,000 tons, up 3.3 percent from last month and up 16.9 percent from the same month one year ago. The daily receipt rate for September was 12,719 tons, down from 12,798 tons the month before. Total tonnage received was 267,200 tons, up from 257,100 tons the month before. At the end of September, flat rolled inventories stood at 3.3 months, down from 3.5 months in August, but up from 2.9 months one year ago.
Plate
Canadian shipments for plate products in the month of September were 96,400 tons, an increase of 7.0 percent from the month before and an increase of 5.6 percent from September 2013. Inventories at the end of the month were 283,500 tons, a decrease of 4.3 percent from last month but an increase of 19.2 percent from the same month one year ago. The daily average receipt rate for September was 3,984 tons, down from 4,550 tons the month before. Plate inventories stood at 2.9 months, down from 3.3 months the previous month but up from 2.6 months in September 2013.
Pipe and Tube
Canadian shipments for pipe and tube products in the month of September were 59,700 tons, an increase of 16.1 percent from the month before and an increase of 12.6 percent from the same month last year. Inventories at the end of the month were 137,500 tons, down 5.2 percent from last month but up 10.2 percent from the same month one year ago. The daily average receipt rate for September was 2,480 tons, up from 2,419 tons the month before. At the end of September, total months on hand for pipe and tube inventories stood at 2.3 months, down from 2.8 months in August and down from 2.4 months one year ago.
