Weekly Raw Steel Production Above 1.7 Million Tons for Second Week

For the week ending January 21, 2017, the American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI) estimated the U.S. steel industry produced 1,703,000 net tons of raw steel, a 0.8 percent decrease over the previous week but a 6.0 percent increase over the revised rate from the same week one year ago. The estimated capacity utilization rate for steel production is 71.8 percent, down from 72.3 percent last week but up from 68.7 percent this time last year.
Estimated total raw steel produced for 2017 YTD is reported to be 5,103,000 tons, up 5.8 percent from the 4,821,000 tons produced during the same period in 2016. The average capacity utilization rate for 2017 YTD is estimated to be 71.7 percent, up from 68.7 for 2016 YTD.
