The Great Lakes Clean Hydrogen Partnership (GLCH) has proceeded with its Department of Energy (DOE) hydrogen hub application. The partnership consists of Linde, Energy Harbor, GE Aerospace, Cleveland-Cliffs, and the University of Toledo.
“This industry-led hydrogen hub intends to ensure that the Midwest is a leader in decarbonization so that regional industries and supply chains are globally competitive, and opportunities are created for workers and their communities,” said Frank Calzonetti, vice president of research at the University of Toledo.
The transition to hydrogen from greenhouse gas-emitting fuels provides an opportunity to attract investors and new businesses, which will create new jobs, he added.
Members of the partnership will contribute their expertise in developing low-carbon hydrogen at Energy Harbor’s Davis-Besse nuclear plant. There, they will use existing carbon-free infrastructure from Energy Harbor’s nuclear power generation and hydrogen-ready facilities. GLCH anticipates being on-line sooner than their competition.
The GLCH currently serves the Ohio and Michigan area and will provide a connection between the East Coast and Midwest in the future.
