Steel Shipments in US Fall in July: AISI

Steel shipments in the US were down year over year and sequentially in July, according to the latest data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
Domestic steel shipments in July totaled 7,550,446 net tons, down 1.4% from the 7,655,692 net tons shipped the previous month, and off 1.6% from the 7,676,083 net tons shipped in July 2022, AISI said.
Year to date (YTD) through July, shipments stood at 51,866,292 net tons, falling 3.3% vs. shipments of 53,649,221 net tons for the same period a year earlier, according to AISI data.
Comparing YTD shipments in the first seven months of 2023 to the same time frame the previous year shows the following: hot-rolled sheet (+4%); cold-rolled sheet (-1%); and corrosion-resistant sheet (-2%).

The difference: The spat with Turkey was a big deal for steel. This time, the 50% reciprocal tariff for Brazil – if it goes into effect as threatened on Aug.1 – hits everything from coffee and to pig iron. It seems almost custom-built to inflict as much pain as possible on Brazil.
