Cleveland-Cliffs’ Lourenco Goncalves said the company will install a new stove at Stelco’s blast furnace in Nanticoke, Ontario.
“We are going to invest in a new stove for the blast furnace,” Cliffs’ chairman, president, and CEO, told the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) on Nov. 21.
Recall that Cliffs closed on its $2.5-billion (CA$3.4-billion) acquisition of Hamilton, Ontario-based Stelco on Nov. 1.
He also said in the interview that the Cleveland-based steelmaker will bring hot-briquetted iron (HBI) into the blast furnace at Stelco’s Lake Erie Works, which is also in Ontario.
His comments were in response to the question of how Cliffs would confront the issue of pollution at Stelco’s plants in Canada. Goncalves referenced Cliffs’ extensive experience running plants in urban areas in the US.
A request for further comment from Cliffs was not returned by time of publication.
Stelco produces over 2 million tons of “high-quality steel products” each year for customers and sectors across North America, according to its website.
