Nucor expands plate product offering, market sources have mixed reactions

Written by Kristen DiLandro

Nucor Plate Group announced that its patent-pending wide floor plate product is now available to customers.

The Charlotte, N.C.-headquartered company’s announcement on Monday states the plate product’s key features are a lug height of 0.02” to 0.04” that provides four-way anti-slip, low trip hazard, improved wear resistance, enhanced mechanical properties, and improved surface finish. The plate is designed for use in industrial settings with oily, dusty, or wet conditions can threaten safety.

One service center associate located in the Northeastern US said Nucor’s latest product offering is helpful for his business. He noted that the domestic supplier who he sporadically relies on for a similar floor plate product is less reliable.

“Some customers ask for this and buying from a well-managed business selling product is great,” he said. “Overall, it doesn’t change too much for my business. It’s just good to have another supplier because my current supplier is bad.”

An Ohio Valley sales associate for a service center expects that the news is good for anyone who gets inquiries but contends that he receives little demand for the product.

“I rarely get any requests for floor plate, if ever. Requirements are usually specific to particular projects. I don’t think it will have much impact,” the second source said.

Nucor offers the following grades: CSA G40.21 38W, 44W, 50W(260W, 300W, 50W), ASTM A36, A572 Grade 50, A606 Type 2, and A786/A786 M.

USS to continue production at Granite City after ‘golden share’ pressure from Trump admin

U.S. Steel said it would continue to roll slabs at its Granite City Works mill near St. Louis, reversing a previous decision to end production at the plant in November. “U.S. Steel will continue to supply slabs to Granite City. As we shared earlier, our goal was to maintain flexibility, and we are pleased to have found a solution to continue to slab consumption at Granite City,” a company spokesperson said in a statement to SMU.
