Shipments from US steel mills slipped from July to August but remained well ahead of last year’s levels.
The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported a 0.5% month-over-month decline in total August mill shipments of 7,762,706 short tons (st).
Still, the month’s shipments were 5.6% higher than August last year.
Year-to-date shipments are ahead of last year, too. AISI calculated YTD mill shipments of 60,700,214 st to be 3.7% higher than in the first eight months of 2024.
YTD shipments of corrosion-resistant sheet and strip were up 2% from last year. At the same time, AISI noted a 2% decline in hot-rolled sheet and strip shipments, as well as a 5% drop in cold-rolled sheet and strip shipments.
