NEMO Industries announces $3B domestic pig iron venture

Written by Stephen Miller

NEMO Industries has announced a venture to build a pig iron plant in Louisiana. The plant will use advanced technologies, including integrating AI.

The project initially will call for construction of a $3-billion facility in Ascension Parish, La. The facility is slated to produce 2.3 million metric tons (mt) per year of granulated pig iron (GPI).

Over the next 15 years, NEMO hopes to invest an additional $5 billion to build two more to produce GPI. The company, describing itself as an AI-powered ironmaking platform, noted in a press release that Cargill Metals is an investing partner, along with several other investment groups.

In phase one, the Louisiana plant is expected to create 350 permanent jobs.

The facility will include a direct-reduced-iron (DRI) module with an electric smelting furnace to convert the DRI into pig iron. Pending permitting and financing, the plant is slated to begin construction in late 2027. Construction is expected to take three years.

NEMO CEO Daniel Liss said in the release, “The iron will be forged by artificial intelligence, made in America, and built to keep our steel supply chain strong for generations to come.”

Speaking of the plant, Lee Kirk, managing director of Cargill Metals said, “Cargill is proud to support NEMO Industries’ new project in Louisiana, which will play a pivotable role in catalyzing more efficient steelmaking.”
