USS to invest $75M in new line at Alabama tubular facility
Written by Ethan Bernard
U.S. Steel has announced a $75-million capital investment to install a premium thread line at its Fairfield Tubular Operations in Alabama.
The plant in Fairfield, Ala., specializes in making American-made steel pipe and tube product. It primarily serves the energy sector, including oil and gas customers.
The project will bring 44 permanent jobs to Fairfield, and 40 of these will be United Steelworkers union- represented positions. Construction of the line is expected to bring ~250 positions.
“This project exemplifies our commitment to growth, innovation, and delivering high-quality products made in the USA,” President and CEO David B. Burritt said in a statement Monday.
Construction of the proposed line will begin shortly, once all approvals have been received, USS said.
The facility currently includes an advanced electric-arc furnace and rounds caster. The company noted the project would allow it to expand capacity for growing market demand, as well as improve efficiency and safety.
Recall that Japan-based Nippon Steel agreed to invest $11 billion to modernize USS operations as a condition for acquiring the Pittsburgh-based steelmaker.
