AISI: Weekly raw steel production ticks up
Written by Brett Linton
Domestic steel production increased last week, according to the latest figures from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Production has trended higher since mid-October, though it is not as strong as output seen over the summer months.
US mills produced an estimated 1,758,000 short tons (st) of raw steel in the week ending Nov. 8, up 18,000 st (1.0%) from the previous week (Figure 1).

Last week’s production was 1.8% above the year-to-date (YTD) weekly average of 1,726,000 st and 9.1% higher than the same week a year earlier. YTD production now stands at 77,228,000 st, 3.1% higher than the same period in 2024.
The mill capability utilization rate was 76.7% last week, up from 76.0% the week prior and above the 72.6% rate seen this time last year. Capability utilization has averaged 77.0% YTD.
Raw production increased week over week (w/w) in three of the five AISI defined regions:
- Northeast – 120,000 st (down 2,000 st)
- Great Lakes – 542,000 st (up 2,000 st)
- Midwest – 258,000 st (up 7,000 st)
- South – 791,000 st (up 18,000 st)
- West – 47,000 st (down 7,000 st)
Editor’s note: The raw steel production tonnage provided in this report is estimated and should be used primarily to assess production trends.
