USS contributes over $2B to Arkansas economy, report says
Written by Ethan Bernard
U.S. Steel’s Arkansas facilities provided more than $2 billion to local and state economies in fiscal year 2024, according to a newly released economic impact report.
The steelmaker’s operations in the state, which include Big River Steel in Osceola and Wheeling Machine Products in Pine Bluff, also “supported or sustained” 4,725 total jobs.
“In just two years, our economic impact in Arkansas has grown fivefold to $2 billion, supporting nearly 5,000 total jobs and generating $45.2 million in state and local taxes for schools and local services,” USS President and CEO David B. Burritt said in a statement on Tuesday.
“With our $3-billion investment in a next-generation electric arc-furnace mini mill (at Big River) and our partnership with Nippon Steel, Arkansas is becoming a global hub for advanced, sustainable steelmaking,” he added.
USS commissioned the study, and it was conducted by Parker Strategy Group, a consulting firm specializing in economic impact analysis.
Recall U.S. Steel and Nippon recently released plans for $14 billion in capital investments across the Pittsburgh-based steelmaker’s facilities. Of that amount, $11 billion is slated for investment by the end of 2028.
