SMU Price Ranges: Coated and plate inch higher, other products stable
Written by Brett Linton
SMU’s sheet and plate prices took a breather this week, holding relatively steady at multi-month highs.
Following nearly two months of increases, prices for hot-rolled (HR) and cold-rolled (CR) coil were unchanged from last week. HR prices remain at $895 per short ton (st), the highest level they have been at since April, having risen $65/st in the last month. CR prices held at a five-month high of $1,070/st and have increased $50/st from early November.
Coated prices ticked $5/st higher week over week (w/w). Galvanized increased to $1,035/st to a six-month high, up $90/st from four weeks ago. Galvalume rose to $1,025/st to a to five-month high, having risen $45 in the last month.
After holding steady last week, plate prices resumed their upwards climb this week, rising $5/st w/w to a near four-month high of $1,025/st. Plate has seen less severe increases in comparison to sheet products, up just $15/st over the past month.
SMU’s price momentum indicator remains at Higher for both sheet and plate products, signaling that we expect prices to continue rising from here.
