SSAB kicks off the cycle
SSAB Americas kicked off the latest price increase cycle by pushing spot plate prices up by a minimum of $50 per short ton (st).
The steelmaker said in a letter to customers on Friday that the price increase was effective for all new, non-contract orders confirmed to ship from March 1 onward.
SSAB Americas has increased plate prices by $190/st over the past five months.
In the same letter, the steelmaker said it would continue to apply published extras, regional freight premiums, and non-preferred freight mode extras.
Nucor joins in
Nucor notified customers that it was aiming to increase all plate product prices by $40/st.
In its Jan. 16 notice, the Charlotte, N.C.-based steelmaker said the increase would apply to new orders that weren’t confirmed by the close of business that day.
The price increase also coincides with Nucor opening its plate orderbook for March.
“We reserve the right to re-quote any order not confirmed by an order acknowledgement,” the letter stated.
The latest price hike comes after Nucor – one of the leading plate producers in the US – has increased plate prices by $170/st since late September.
Oregon Steel Mills closes out the party
Oregon Steel Mills rounded out chorus of price hikes by also announcing a price increase of at least $40/st for steel plate.
The Portland, Ore.-based company told customers on Friday that the minimum increase was effective immediately with all new orders.
It applies to all carbon, HSLA, hot-rolled coil, normalized, and quenched and tempered products, the company said.
OSM has increased plate prices by $180/st since September.
