    Written by Stephen Miller

Jefferson Shredding & Recycling LLC, Birmingham, Ala., is planning to install a shredder system at Outokumpu’s Calvert, Ala., stainless steelmaking facility, according to a recent press release.

The project is an investment by Jefferson of $22.4 million. It will produce approximately 9,000 tons per month of recycled iron and steel scrap to feed Outokumpu’s electric-arc furnace.

The announcement indicated groundbreaking will start in June 2026 and is expected to be operational in August 2027. The project will create 15 permanent jobs and will generate $1.3 million in payroll when running at full capacity.

The Jefferson group has a long history in the Southeast of assisting steelmakers in their procurement of ferrous scrap.

In an interview with News 5 WKRB in Mobile, Ala., Paul Dreher Sr. of Jefferson said, “Jefferson Shredding and Recycling is proud to partner with Outokumpu on a project which strengthens the circular economy and supports the future of metal manufacturing in our region.”

Dreher went on to say, “By processing and recycling scrap metal locally, we’re creating a more efficient and sustainable supply chain while investing in an industry that provides high-quality jobs and drives economic growth across southwest Alabama.”
