Rig count pushes higher in Canada, steady in US
Written by Laura Miller
Oil and gas drilling activity in Canada picked up over the past week, while drilling in the US remained mostly steady, according to the latest Baker Hughes rig counts.
The overall US rig count is down one from last week to 562, with two oil rigs gained, three gas rigs lost, and miscellaneous rigs unchanged. At this time last year, there were 555 rigs in operation. Oil rigs are down six, gas rigs up eight, and miscellaneous rigs up five from last year.
Meanwhile, Canada’s rig count rose by 11 to 180 rigs, with oil, gas, and miscellaneous rigs all seeing more drilling week over week. The Canadian rig count is 42 above the count at this time last year, with oil rigs up 30, gas rigs up 11, and miscellaneous rigs up one.

The monthly international rig count was updated last week with May data. This count was 1,046 rigs, down three from the previous month and 25 fewer than the same month one year ago.

The Baker Hughes rig count is significant for the steel industry because it is a leading indicator of oil country tubular goods (OCTG) demand, a key end market for steel sheet.
