Algoma EAF down for unplanned outage, warns shipments could slip
Written by Laura Miller
Algoma Steel Inc. has halted its electric-arc furnace (EAF) in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, after a turbine failure at its Lake Superior Power (LSP) plant.
Technical teams and external specialists are assessing the damaged turbine. It went offline after detecting an abnormal condition. The company said other units were not affected.
Algoma is advancing previously scheduled maintenance across the power plant and other operations during the unplanned outage.
Because LSP supplies power to Algoma’s steelworks, the company suspended EAF production. Downstream finishing and shipping continue. Algoma said current inventories and order books should cover near-term deliveries. However, the company warned that future shipment volumes may be affected.
The unplanned EAF outage should last no more than 21 days, Algoma said.
The company is working on an alternative onsite power supply that could allow an earlier restart. If approved, EAF operations could resume in about 10 days.
Algoma is also mobilizing a contracted spare turbine with GE Vernova. Commissioning that unit is expected to restore normal LSP operations.
The steelmaker will issue another update once it finalizes the full assessment and restart timeline.
