Algoma Steel has restarted electric-arc furnace (EAF) production in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, after a turbine failure at its Lake Superior Power (LSP) plant.
The Canadian steelmaker said output resumed on Aug. 29 while the LSP turbine remains unavailable, which was first reported on Aug. 17.

Drilling activity increased in the US this week but declined in Canada, according to active oil and gas rig count figures recently released from Baker Hughes. United Steelworkers (USW) International President Roxanne Brown urged US and Canadian trade representatives to reach an agreement that puts working families first. Her words come as trade talks between the two nations remain at an impasse, and escalating tensions have led to new tariffs on both sides. “This conflict is hurting jobs. It’s hurting facilities. It’s hurting communities. And it’s creating uncertainty for workers and families in both countries,” Brown said at a press event on Tuesday.
