Algoma resumes EAF steel output while turbine remains offline

Algoma Steel has restarted electric-arc furnace (EAF) production in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, after a turbine failure at its Lake Superior Power (LSP) plant.
The Canadian steelmaker said output resumed on Aug. 29 while the LSP turbine remains unavailable, which was first reported on Aug. 17.
Algoma has worked with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to carry out interim operating arrangements, allowing it to resume production.
“The company is currently maintaining sustained production under these arrangements, including through certain planned work on the provincial electricity system,” Algoma said in a statement on Wednesday.
The steelmaker noted it is “pursuing multiple alternatives intended to restore full LSP generating capacity as quickly as possible.”
Additionally, Algoma said the IESO is “reviewing upcoming planned power system outages, with the objective of minimizing potential interruptions to the company’s steelmaking operations while maintaining the safety and reliability of the provincial electricity system.”
Algoma is continuing to assess the potential impact on output and shipments, while working on several mitigation options.
“The extent of any impact will depend on the timing and implementation of these measures, which are expected to reduce the potential production impact,” the company said.
