Liberty Steel temporarily furloughs workers at Illinois wire rod mill

    Written by Ethan Bernard

Liberty Steel workers at its Bartonville, Ill., facility face furloughs after an industry downturn, according to a media report.

A company spokesperson told WMBD-TV News in Peoria, Ill., last week that the majority of the workers affected will be at its wire mill. But the action is temporary, and “we are looking forward to bringing all employees back.”

Additionally, the spokesperson noted ~300 people are employed at the wire mill. However, the number of employees being furloughed is currently being determined.

Some of the workers were furloughed starting July 13, according to the spokesperson, and others will be furloughed next week.

The Bartonville Liberty Steel & Wire mill is documented as producing billets, wire rod, industrial wire, and fencing products.

Liberty Steel USA has six manufacturing plants in the US and is part of global steelmaker Liberty Steel Group.

A request for comment from Liberty Steel was not returned by time of publication.
