    AISI: Raw steel production rebounds to 7-week high

    Domestic steel mill output increased last week to a seven-week high, according to recently released American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) figures.

    Raw steel production was estimated at 1,858,000 short tons (st) in the week ending July 25, up 28,000 st, or 1.5%, from the prior week (Figure 1). This is the highest weekly rate seen since early June and only 40,000 st below the six-year high of 1,898,000 st seen in May.

    Apparent steel supply holds near multi-year high in July

    Apparent steel supply eased 2% from June to July but remained at one of the higher levels recorded in recent years, according to SMU’s analysis of recently released Department of Commerce and American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) data. This measure is calculated by combining domestic mill shipments and finished US steel imports, then subtracting total US exports. It can also be used as a proxy for domestic steel demand.
