AK Steel Second Sheet Mill to Raise Prices
Written by John Packard
May 5, 2016
AK Steel raised prices earlier today on all flat rolled steels by $60 per ton. The announcement is their 6th going back to early December 2015. Since December they have increased prices another $200 per ton as we have shown in the table below.
Buyers and those in the financial community need to be aware that the AK Steel announcement is on spot tonnage only and the prices referenced are “minimums.” We understand that AK Steel is not quoting any spot prices at the minimums shown in the table below at this time.
From our perspective, speaking to buyers dealing with mills around the country, we are seeing the trend toward $620 per ton hot rolled and $800 per ton cold rolled and coated (base + extras). We anticipate AK Steel will sell any spot tonnage closer to those levels than what is referenced in the table above.
There are still a number of mills who have not provided new pricing to their customers and who are not taking any new orders at this time. We anticipate once the scrap prices settle for the month of May we will see more announcements – verbal or otherwise.
