SMU Price Ranges: Sheet and plate markets strengthen

    Written by Brett Linton

All five of SMU’s price indices increased this week to new multi-year highs. Sheet prices rose $10-15 per short ton (st) week over week (w/w), while plate prices jumped $30/st. Prices have increased by $185-255/st (20-25%) since the beginning of the year.

This marks the 20th consecutive week that our indices have held steady or increased. And the tone from buyers remains the same. Spot tons are hard to come by due to limited mill availability and stretched lead times. Also, low inventories and mill outages are keeping supply tight.

Our hot-rolled index rose to $1,115/st, the highest it has been since May 2023. All other products are at highs last seen in early 2024; cold rolled ticked up to $1,305/st, galvanized and Galvalume rose to $1,300/st, and plate jumped to $1,290/st.

SMU’s price momentum indicator remains at higher for both sheet and plate products, signaling that we expect prices to increase further in the short term.
