Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMC) announced on Wednesday that it will change its name to Nippon Steel Corporation effective April 1, 2019.
“NSSMC has determined to adopt a new and more inclusive trade name befitting a steelmaker with origins in Japan and an emphasis on continuing growth in global markets looking toward the future,” said the company.
The NSSMC name originated in October 2012 from the merger of Nippon Steel Corporation and Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. NSSMC acquired a 51 percent share of Nisshin Steel in March 2017, and upon acquiring the remaining equity shares in May 2018 Nisshin became a wholly-owned subsidiary. NSSMC said it is also considering consolidating Sanyo Special Steel Co. as a subsidiary.
