November U.S. steel exports increased 1% from October to 725,000 net tons, according to the latest U.S. Department of Commerce data. While October and November levels are down compared to the summer months, the 12-month moving average through November is now at a 32-month high.
Recall that March and June of 2021 were the two highest monthly levels in the last three years (790,000 and 778,000 tons, respectively). It was just last summer when the market saw record low exports, with May 2020 levels reaching the lowest seen in 24 years at 374,000 tons.
Of our six monitored product groups in November, four products increased month-over-month and two decreased.
Total exports for the first 11 months of 2021 reached 8.11 million tons. That’s up from 6.47 million tons in the same period of 2020, and up from 7.21 million tons in the same period of 2019.
On a rolling-12-month average, November exports rose to a 32-month high of 727,000 tons.
Total November exports are less than 1% below the three-month moving average (average of September through November 2021), and just 660 tons below the 12-month moving average (average of December 2020 through November 2021). Here is a detailed breakdown by product:
Cut-to-length plate exports increased 4% from October to 103,492 tons, up 31% compared to one year ago.
Exports of coiled plate were 51,139 tons in November, up 23% from the prior month, but down 2% from levels this time last year.
November hot rolled steel exports were up 11% compared to October at 73,808 tons, up 12% from one year prior.
Exports of cold rolled products were 58,025 tons in November, down 11% from October, yet up 31% from the same time last year.
Galvanized exports increased 16% month over month to 115,040 tons. Compared to levels one year ago, November was up 3%.
Exports of all other metallic-coated products were 25,081 tons, down 12% from October, but up 10% year-over-year.

CRU: Longs pricing trends diverge in North, South America
Most longs prices in the US were unchanged this month, except for rebar, which declined by $1.50/cwt ($30/short ton) m/m. While end-use demand is stable, inventories are well-stocked, keeping purchases limited. Domestic availability is sufficient to meet current demand, hindering the appetite for imported material. Meanwhile, prices for scrap remained under pressure in June, with […]

CRU: Demand weakness continues to weigh on global sheet markets
Demand has remained persistently weak across the globe for sheet steel, weighing on prices. US HR coil prices fell the furthest this week as high-volume, low-priced deals were transacted as mills looked to fill order books and competed with one another amid relative demand weakness. Meanwhile, European prices were also down due to low demand […]
