Steelmaking Ops Continue After Fire at Algoma Coal Conveyor
Written by Laura Miller
August 10, 2022
A fire at one of Algoma Steel’s coal conveyors is not affecting iron and steelmaking operations at the company’s mill in Sault St. Marie, Ontario. But coke production will be reduced while the damage is repaired.
The fire occurred on Aug. 7, 2022, on one of the conveyors that supplies coal to two of Algoma’s three coke batteries.
The company thinks it has a sufficient supply of coke and supply contracts for purchased coke to continue to support steelmaking operations, according to a statement.
“Our emergency response personnel, together with Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services, are to be commended for their quick action suppressing the blaze and containing damages without injury to any of our personnel,” Algoma president and CEO Michael Garcia said.
Algoma produces hot-rolled coil, cold-rolled coil, and plate. Phase one of modernization project of the company’s plate mill was completed in June, while phase two has been pushed out until next year.
