US steel export volumes remained relatively flat in November compared to October, according to the latest US Commerce Department data.
November’s exports total stood at 697,447 tons vs. 697,399 tons the previous month. October remains the lowest volume export month for 2022.
In comparison to recent years, export levels had remained high for the majority of 2022.
Of our six monitored product groups in Table 1, four increased month over month (MoM), while two decreased.
On a year-to-date (YTD) basis, total steel exports for the first 11 months of 2022 now average 758,619 tons per month. This is up from a monthly average of 737,588 tons in the same period of 2021.
On a 12-month moving average basis (12MMA) through November, exports for the past 12 months now average 747,966 tons (Figure 2).
Here is a detailed breakdown by product:
Cut-to-length plate exports increased 1% MoM to 90,109 tons in November vs. October, but down 4% compared to levels one year prior.
Exports of coiled plate were 32,357 tons in November, up 6% from the prior month and down 77% vs. November 2021.
November hot-rolled steel exports decreased 10% from October, and moved down 27% compared to volumes in the same month of 2021.
Exports of cold-rolled products were 40,895 tons in November, down 24% MoM, and 30% lower than November 2021.
Galvanized exports in November were 114,385 tons, up 10% compared to October but down 1% year over year.
Exports of all other metallic-coated products increased 1% MoM to 23,066 tons. Compared to levels one year prior, November was down 8%.
Figures 3 and 4 show US exports by product, both monthly levels and on a 12MMA basis.
