Drilling activity increased in both the US and Canada for the week ended Friday, July 18, according to the latest data from Baker Hughes.
Following 11 consecutive weekly declines, the US rig count rose by seven rigs week over week (w/w). Prior to this, US drilling activity had fallen to its lowest level since late 2021. There were 42 fewer rigs operating in the US last week vs. one year prior.
Canadian rig counts increased for the seventh straight week, up 10 rigs w/w to a 17-week high of 172. Canada’s total is down by 25 rigs year over year..

The monthly international rig count increased by 27 rigs in June to 913. This count is down by 44 from one year ago.

The Baker Hughes rig count is significant for the steel industry because it is a leading indicator of oil country tubular goods (OCTG) demand, a key end market for steel sheet.
