SMU price ranges: Sheet and plate prices rise further
Written by Brett Linton
SMU’s price indices increased across the board this week, reaching new multi-month highs. Sheet prices rose by as much as $35 per short ton (st) from last week, while plate ticked up $5/st. Prices are now $25-55/st higher than they were this time last month.
Hot-rolled coil prices jumped $30/st week over week (w/w) to a four-month high of $860/st. This marks the sixth-consecutive weekly gain and the largest weekly increase since March.
Our cold rolled index rose for the fifth straight week, increasing $10/st w/w to $1,030/st. The last time cold rolled prices were this high was back in July.
Coated prices climbed to three-month highs this week. Galvanized jumped $35/st w/w to $980/st, the biggest weekly move seen since March. Meanwhile, Galvalume rose $20/st from last week to $1,000/st.
Plate prices edged higher for the third week in a row, rising $5/st w/w to a three-month high of $1,015 per short ton (st).
SMU’s price momentum indicator remains at higher for all sheet and plate products, signaling we foresee prices continuing to rise from here.
