Algoma Steel CEO Michael Garcia has been recognized by Canada’s The Globe and Mail as “CEO of the Year: Corporate Citizen.”

“This award celebrates Canadian CEOs who demonstrate leadership, vision, and responsibility — qualities Mike brings to Algoma Steel and to our community every day,” the Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario-based steelmaker, said in a statement earlier this month.

Additionally, Algoma said, “Beyond leading one of the largest industrial transformations in Canada with a focus on sustainability and safety, Mike is deeply committed to strengthening the community we call home.”

As previously reported, Garcia will retire at the end of the year. Algoma’s CFO Rajat Marwah, was appointed president on Nov. 1 and will be CEO on Jan. 1. Michael Moraca, currently treasurer, will become CFO effective Jan. 1 as well.

Garcia was named CEO of Algoma on June 1, 2022, and has led as the company navigates its EAF transformation and recent tariff volatility.
