SMU Price Ranges: Plate stable, sheet pushes higher

    Written by Brett Linton

All of SMU’s sheet price indices rose this week, climbing to new multi-month highs. At the same time, our plate index held steady. Sheet prices are now up $55-90 per short ton (st) compared to one month ago, while plate has risen $20/st in that time.

Hot-rolled (HR) coil prices increased for the eighth straight week, jumping $25/st higher week over week (w/w) to $895/st. The last time HR prices were this high was in April.

Our cold rolled index rose $30/st this week to a five-month high of $1,070/st, marking the seventh consecutive weekly increase.

Coated prices also rose to near five-month highs this week. Galvanized increased $30/st w/w to $1,030/st, while Galvalume rose $15/st to $1,020/st.

Following four weeks of increases, plate prices held steady this week at a three-month high of $1,020/st.

SMU’s price momentum indicator remains pointing higher for both sheet and plate products, signaling that we expect prices to continue rising from here.
