SMU price ranges: Modest sheet increases, plate jumps
Written by Brett Linton
The majority of SMU’s sheet and plate price indices rose this week, with multiple products climbing to new multi-month highs.
Sheet prices are now $20-30 per short ton (st) above mid-December levels, having consistently held steady or moved higher each week since September. Plate has risen $35/st over the past month, much stronger momentum that it had had before the start of this year.
Hot-rolled (HR) coil prices increased $5/st week over week (w/w) to $935/st. The last time HR prices were this high was in March 2025.
Our cold rolled index rose $10/st this week to $1,100/st. Prices today are comparable to those of April 2025.
Coated prices were mixed this week. Our galvanized index remained at $1,060/st, while Galvalume rose $5/st w/w to $1,080/st, both at eight-month highs.
Our plate index rose $20/st w/w to $1,055/st, the highest measure seen in over five months.
SMU’s price momentum indicator remains at higher for both sheet and plate products, signaling that we expect prices to continue rising from here.
