Fire at substation near SDI's Sinton facility: Report
Written by Ethan Bernard
There was a fire at an electrical substation “near and owned by Steel Dynamics (Inc.’s) Southwest-Sinton Flat Roll Division” in Texas, according to a media report on Wednesday.
Fire crews were trying to extinguish a fire there yesterday, NBC affiliate KRIS reported on Jan. 14.
Further details, and if the fire had impacted production at SDI’s Sinton operation, were not immediately available.
When asked for updated information on the fire, a spokesperson for power provider AEP told SMU on Thursday, “The information I received is that the equipment in question is owned by the customer (SDI).” No further details were provided.
A request for comment from SDI was not returned by time of publication.
Steel Dynamics’ Sinton facility (Southwest–Sinton Flat Roll Division) in Sinton, Texas, is a flat‑rolled steel mill producing hot‑rolled, cold‑rolled and coated products for industrial and automotive markets.
Though the mill has been affected by some setbacks in the past, on its Q3’25 earnings call, SDI said performance at the mill has improved.
