    Nucor increases HRC spot price by $10/ton

    Nucor’s consumer spot price (CSP) for hot-rolled coil increased to $960 per short ton (st), up $10/st vs. the prior week.

    Court turns to creditor consortium after AHMSA auction bid falls through

    The leading bidder for bankrupt Mexican steelmaker Altos Hornos de Mexico (AHMSA) failed to provide the required earnest money guarantee to confirm its $1.4 billion bid for the steelmaker and its Minera del Norte (MINOSA) mining assets. The court will now consider selling the assets to a consortium of creditors. After the bankruptcy auction on Sept. 25, the court overseeing the proceedings granted the leading bidder, Construcciones e Ingenierías Electromecánicas SA de CV (CIESA), ten days to provide a bid bond of $56.3 million. The Oct. 13 deadline passed without any prequalified bidders, including CIESA, providing the required amount. In fact, the court said CIESA deposited only 5,000 Mexican pesos (US$271).

    Stelco proceeds with layoffs as Ottawa warns of penalties, forced divestiture

    Stelco is proceeding with layoffs at its Hamilton, Ontario, mill despite the Canadian government’s threat of legal action. Last week, Canadian Industry Minister Mélanie Joly had given Cleveland-Cliffs Inc., the owner of Stelco, five days to respond to its call to maintain employment levels at the Canadian mill. Just days earlier, Cliffs announced it would indefinitely idle Stelco's finishing operations and lay off 500 workers. But the government says Cliffs agreed to maintain employment levels as a condition of its 2024 purchase of Stelco.

    Hertha Metals breaks ground on Texas iron plant, eyes 500,000-ton steel mill

    Hertha Metals has broken ground on its first commercial plant, a $100 million project that the startup says will demonstrate its process at scale and lay the groundwork for a 500,000-metric-ton-per-year steel mill. The company celebrated the groundbreaking of the Hertha Chalyx project on Friday, Oct. 9, in Conroe, Texas. The plant is designed to produce ~10,000 metric tons of steel-grade and magnet-grade high-purity iron each year. It will run on domestic iron ore, primarily from Minnesota’s Iron Range, and natural gas from Texas.

    Nucor, Gerdau up MBQ prices again

    Nucor and Gerdau have announced price increases for merchant bar quality (MBQ) products. The Nucor Bar Mill Group informed customers on Oct. 8 that it was raising prices on all MBQ products by $30 per short ton (st). The move is effective for new orders received after the close of business on Oct. 8. “All confirmed orders as of the close of business on October 8th, 2026 will be price-protected if shipped by end of business day, October 22th, 2026,” Nucor noted in a letter to customers.
