SMU Price Ranges: Sheet moves higher, plate stable
Written by Brett Linton
SMU’s sheet price indices inched up to new multi-month highs this week, while plate prices held steady.
Sheet prices have trended higher since September and have all risen between $20-40 per short ton (st) across the past month. Plate saw some momentum at the start of the year but has flattened out in recent weeks, similar to month-ago levels.
Our hot-rolled coil index is now up to a two-year high of $975/st, rising $10/st from last week. Cold rolled increased $15/st to a nine-month high of $1,125/st.
Coated prices increased to levels not seen since April 2025. Galvanized rose $5/st week over week (w/w) to $1,080/st, while Galvalume increased $15/st to $1,115/st.
Our plate index held steady at $1,055/st, resting at one of the highest rates recorded in the last six months.
SMU’s price momentum indicator continues to point to higher for both sheet and plate products, signaling that we expect prices to increase further in the short term.
