SMU Price Ranges: Sheet moves higher, plate stable

    Written by Brett Linton

SMU’s sheet price indices continued to climb this week, while plate held steady, all at multi-year highs. This marks the 19th consecutive week that our price indices have held steady or increased. All products are between $30-70/st higher than they were one month ago.

Sources continue to report tight spot availability and say that mills are becoming more aggressive on coated pricing. Low inventories, mill outages, and long lead times continue to pressure supply.

Our hot-rolled index increased to a three-year high of $1,105/st. Cold rolled, galvanized, and Galvalume all ticked up to levels last seen in early 2024, rising to $1,295/st, $1,285/st, and $1,290/st, respectively. Plate held steady at a two-year high of $1,260/st.

SMU’s price momentum indicator remains at higher for both sheet and plate products, signaling that we expect prices to increase further in the short term.

Note that we have increased the extras used in our G90 galvanized and AZ50 Galvalume indices from to reflect the revised U.S. Steel coating extras announced last week. We have also updated the extras behind our Price Estimator Tool and made some usability improvements in the process.
