Steelmaker Tyasa has launched the first stage of a $250 million (€215 M) project, which is increasing special bar quality (SBQ) capacity by 400,000 metric tons (mt) per year at its Ixtaczoquitlan plant in Veracruz, central Mexico.
The inaugural phase enables production of round bars and hot-rolled flat bars in a range of dimensions. The start-up of inspection, conditioning, cold finishing, and heat treatment lines will follow in Q3, the company said.
The additional capacity, taking Tyasa’s total to 1.6-million mt per year, is geared towards meeting demand from the automotive, oil, gas, energy, tool manufacturing, metal working, and other industries.
After referring to the expanded production capacity’s import-substitution credentials, the company said: “With this new capacity, Tyasa strengthens the national supply of specialty steels and contributes to the development of more robust and competitive supply chains for Mexican manufacturers.”
