UAW votes to ratify new agreement with Dauch/American Axle, strike ends
Written by Kristen DiLandro
The United Autoworkers (UAW) local 2093 voted 80% in favor of ratifying the latest contract agreement between the union and American Axle/Dauch Corporation.
Officially, the strike ended at 6 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on June 15, when UAW members returned to work at the Three Rivers, Mich., facility.
According to its June 15 statement, the UAW’s latest contract secures stronger wages, more paid days off, and maintains workers’ health care programs.
Workers rallied for “$30 by ‘30,” demanding wages reach up to $30 per hour by 2030. A cry the union reasoned was fair due to its willingness to endure wage cuts when American Axle would have been shuttered in 2008. The UAW members insisted Dauch (formerly American Axle) make progress on closing the wage differential.
UAW Region 1D Director Steve Dawes applauded the terms of the deal.
“Not only did they take care of the legacy people that were here and made the tough decisions back in 2008 to keep the place open, they took care of the people working there today,” he said. “They also took care of all the future generations that will come to work here in Three Rivers, Michigan, at American Axle.”
The union’s President, Shawn Fein remarked, “the industry can afford our demands. From the time we walked off ten days ago to this tentative agreement, the company more than doubled the money on the table. Labor is our power and we can’t sell ourselves short in this economic crisis we’re facing.”
GM deferred to Dauch for comments. SMU did not receive comments from Dauch Corp.
