SMU Price Ranges: Sheet climbs further, plate stabilizes
Written by Brett Linton
SMU’s sheet price indices increased further this week, while plate held steady, all at multi-year highs.
Prices have risen $40-85 per short ton (st) in the past month and are up $200-265/st (22-25%) from the start of the year. Buyers continue to report that spot ton availability is an issue, coupled with extended lead times, mill outages, and low inventories.
Our hot-rolled index rose to a three-year high of $1,130/st, the highest recorded since April 2023. Cold rolled prices are also at the highest levels seen since that time, rising to $1,335/st this week.
Coated products are at highs last witnessed in January 2024; galvanized rose to $1,325/st this week, and Galvalume increased to $1,330/st.
Plate held at $1,290/st, high levels last seen in February 2024.
SMU’s price momentum indicator remains at higher for both sheet and plate products, signaling that we expect prices to increase further in the short term.
