NEMO Industries taps Tenova as technology provider for Louisiana DRI project

NEMO Industries has chosen Tenova as the technology provider for its planned direct-reduced iron (DRI) plant in Louisiana.

The plant will be based on ENERGIRON DRI technology, which was developed by Tenova along with fellow Italian firm Danieli.

The Italian supplier of steelmaking and metals-processing technologies said this will anchor NEMO’s direct-reduction-to-electric-smelting pig iron project.

“For Tenova, this agreement offers another proof point that Tenova’s technology represents the vanguard of future global iron production,” Stefano Maggiolino, Tenova HYL president and CEO, said in a statement last week.

“It gives NEMO Industries the technical foundation in terms of capital and operating expenditures, carbon content, and sustainability to prove its DRI-based pig iron model,” he added.

The plant is set to use the ENERGIRON Zero Reformer configuration. It will produce ~2.5 million metric tons per year of hot and cold DRI.

Tenova said it will start developing the front-end engineering design as the project moves toward the ”final investment decision,” anticipated in December 2027.

The company also noted the plant will be prepared for the future integration of carbon-capture solutions. Additionally, the design includes the possibility for future hydrogen use.

Further terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Michael DuBose, NEMO Industries co-founder and president, was bullish on the prospects for the new technology.

“ENERGIRON DRI technology positions us to develop a pig iron facility that will strengthen the American steel supply chain and reduce our reliance on imported steel inputs,” he said.
