United States Steel Corp. plans to break ground on its direct-reduced iron (DRI) production facility in Arkansas this week. The Pittsburgh-based steelmaker will hold a ceremonial groundbreaking on Friday morning, according to a media advisory sent to SMU. The DRI facility will be located next door to the Big River 2 steel plant in Osceola, Ark. U.S. Steel said the new facility will utilize iron ore sourced from the company’s Minnesota Ore operations. BRS2 will transfer hot DRI to its two electric-arc furnaces to produce steel for the automotive, solar, packaging, and construction industries.

Mesabi Metallics, part of the Essar Group, has picked Midrex Technologies to supply the direct-reduced iron (DRI) component of its planned $15 billion steelmaking complex in Iowa. Recall the company announced plans to build a 10-million-ton-per-year mill, which would make it by far the largest steel plant in the US. The first phase is planned for 7.5 million tons of steel per year, with first production planned for 2030.
