Hyundai-POSCO choose Danieli for EAF steel project in Louisiana

    Written by Ethan Bernard

South Korea’s Hyundai and POSCO have chosen Italian mill equipment provider Danieli to build several installations at their proposed steel mill in Louisiana.

The contracts given to Danieli include two electric-arc furnaces with secondary metallurgy, two thick slab casters, and two slab reheating furnaces, Danieli said in a statement on May 4.

Also, the ENERGIRON consortium by Italy’s Tenova and Danieli has been chosen as the supplier for the direct reduction plant in Ascension Parish, La., on the west bank of the Mississippi River.

The direct reduction plant will have a nominal capacity of 2.5 million metric tons per year of hot and cold direct-reduced iron (DRI). It is designed to be hydrogen future‑ready and is equipped with carbon capture technology.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Recall that in December 2025, POSCO confirmed a 20% stake in the proposed EAF mill, with Hyundai having the remaining stake.

The proposed Hyundai-POSCO Ascension Parish facility, with an investment of ~$5.8 billion, will produce 650,000 metric tons (mt) of hot-rolled coil and 2.05 million mt of cold-rolled coil annually. Operations are slated to begin in 2029.
