    AISI: Domestic production recovers further

    US raw steel production increased last week, further recovering from the four-month low seen in early August, according to recently published American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) data. Production has been historically strong for most of this year.

    US steel mills produced an estimated 1,848,000 short tons (st) of raw steel in the week ending Aug. 22, a 15,000 st increase from the previous week (Figure 1). This compares with a six-year high of 1,898,000 st set in mid-May.

    US steel imports reach 15-month high in August, rise further in September

    Steel imports into the US crept higher in August and continued climbing in September, according to the Department of Commerce's latest import license data. August imports rose 3.4% from July to a 15-month high. September license data collected through Oct. 5 shows another 6.2% month-on-month increase. Imports continue to recover from some of the lowest levels since 2020, seen late last year through February this year.
