A Pennsylvania state senator plans to submit legislation to incentivize steelmaking in the state.
Democrat Nick Pisciottano intends to introduce the Fueling Opportunities for the Revitalization, Growth, and Efficiency of Steel (FORGES) Tax Credit to the state legislature.
His District 45 includes steel operations such as U.S. Steel’s Mon Valley Works.
In a statement on May 7, Pisciottano said FORGES “will exempt Pennsylvania-made steel from the Sales and Use Tax to incentivize production in facilities in our state and generate demand for high-quality Pennsylvania steel at competitive prices.”
He added that the FORGES tax credit program “will reward capital investments in steelmaking facilities in Pennsylvania with additional credits available for investments made in the newest steelmaking technologies.”
Pisciottano emphasized the importance of steel to the US economy.
“Our country needs to do more to protect its manufacturing base, and steel is a key industrial sector for the nation’s economic success as well as its national security,” he said.
