SMU Price Ranges: Market gradually climbs higher
Written by Brett Linton
All five of SMU’s sheet and plate price indices increased this week for the second week in a row, with tags inching up to new multi-month highs. Prices are now up $30-70/st compared to four weeks ago.
Hot-rolled (HR) coil prices rose for the seventh consecutive week, moving $10/st higher week over week (w/w) to $870/st. Our cold rolled index climbed by the same amount, increasing for the sixth-straight week to $1,040/st. The last time prices for either of these products were this high was back in July.
Coated prices also rose to four-month highs this week. Galvanized jumped $20/st w/w to $1,000/st, and Galvalume rose $5/st to $1,005/st.
Plate prices ticked higher for the fourth straight week, rising $5/st w/w to a three-month high of $1,020 per short ton (st).
SMU’s price momentum indicator remains at higher for all sheet and plate products, signaling that we foresee prices continuing to rise from here.
