ArcelorMittal Dofasco completes final coke push at No. 3 coke plant

Canada’s ArcelorMittal Dofasco completed the final push of coke at its No. 3 Coke Plant on April 13. It marks the beginning of a controlled shutdown and the next step in the company’s decarbonization pathway, first announced in 2021.

The cokemaking team at the company’s mill in Hamilton, Ontario, prepared the facility for a safe, orderly wind-down. All impacted employees are being reassigned to new roles across the site, with individual transition plans in place, the company said.

The flat-rolled steelmaker emphasized the legacy of the plant and the generations of workers who operated it.

“Today, my thoughts turn to the generations of dedicated cokemakers at No. 3 plant who have done their job with pride and excellence over the years,” said Ron Bedard, president and CEO of ArcelorMittal Dofasco. “They have each contributed to making our company the strongest steel maker in Canada.”

Decommissioning the No. 3 coke plant will bring community and environmental benefits, including reductions in visible emissions, according to the company. Dofasco will continue operating its remaining No. 2 coke plant, with ongoing investment to meet Ontario’s Environmental Compliance Approval requirements.

The company said the move reflects both its long-term decarbonization ambitions and its commitment to protecting Canadian melted-and-poured steelmaking and the livelihoods of its workforce.

ArcelorMittal Dofasco is transitioning from blast furnace/basic oxygen furnace to direct-reduced iron/electric-arc furnace steelmaking. The company broke ground on the CA$1.8 billion ($1.29 billion USD) decarbonization project in October 2022. It plans to start up the DRI operations and a second EAF this year.
